Emperor penguins live in the ocean around Antarctica. Their eggs and chicks take a long time to grow, so females have to lay their eggs in the Antarctic winter. Males and females walk up to 120 kilometres (75 miles) over snow and ice to reach their breeding colonies. Females leave males to look after the eggs once they are laid, returning two months later. Chicks take around six months to grow and are looked after by one parent at a time.
