Harksbill turtles are rare and protected by law. Unfortunately, many are killed for their beautiful shells. Tourists often buy them, not knowing that it is illegal to do so. Shells are confiscated at airports and ports and are sometimes then given to museums. Everyone can take part in looking after rare wildlife, by being careful not to buy products containing parts of endangered species.
Turtles have been around for over 200 million years. They have an outer shell covering their ribs and belly. The largest species that live on land are called tortoises. Small species that live in freshwater rivers, ponds and lakes are called terrapins. They are found in most parts of the world, except the cold Arctic and Antarctic regions. All species lay their eggs on land.
